Sightseeing in Zürich

There's a lot to discover in Zurich! From one of the most scenic shopping streets in Europe to architectural sights to enchanting historic lanes – Zurich is an experience. Here are half a dozen suggestions for all who only have limited time to explore the City alongside their Denkfest attendance.

Langstrassenquartier

The Volkshaus, where the Denkfest will take place, is situated on one side of the Helvetia Square, the Langstrasse (Long Street) borders the other side of the square. The quarter, through which the Langstrasse runs, probably displays most clearly how multi-cultural Zürich is.

Bahnhofstrasse

One of the most well known streets in the world. Built at the site where about 150 years ago the city's fortified moat was located, it connects the City's main railway station with the Lake of Zürich. You'll find a wide range of stores, ranging from exclusive local confectionaries to international design chains. From the Bahnhofstrasse you can take the Rennweg or the Augustinergasse into the historic City Centre.

ETH / Polyterrasse / University

Built in 1864 according to the plans of the German architect Gottfried Semper, the main building of the ETH Zürich – one of the world's leading technically oriented universities – houses impressive rooms. From the Central, an important interchange of the tram network, the ETH and the neighbouring university are less than two minutes away by the Polybahn, a romantic, narrow gauge funicular.

Nieder- und Oberdorf

As part of the City's historic Centre, the Niederdorf (the lower village) and the Oberdorf (the upper village) stretch from the "Central" to Bellevue by the lake and the Rämistrasse, where the universities are situated. In the historic lanes you will find countless bars, restaurants, clubs, cinemas, and all kinds of shops.

Urania observatory

Built in 1907, the observatory is one of Zürich's scientific points of interest. With almost 50m in height, it allows a fantastic view on the city below.

Additionally, the observatory houses a powerful 12 ton telescope. Its 30cm diameter and focal length of 5.05m allows a 600-fold magnification.

Lake and lakeside promenade

During summer and autumn, the lake and the esplanade rank among Zurich's most beautiful attractions. Rides on the Zurichsee boats within the City's own territory are included in the denkfest festival pass! A stroll along the promenade is an absolute must!

A unique feature amidst the promenade is the China Garden by the Blatterwiese.
